A Brief History of Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop was developed in 1987 by two brothers, namely Thomas Knoll and John Knoll. In 1988, they sold the license to Adobe Systems Incorporated. At that time, Thomas, a doctoral student, designed a program called Display, a program to display grayscale images on a monochrome screen. Then collaborated with his brother, an employee of Industrial Light & Magic, to work on this program. Thomas changed the name of the program to ImagePro but due to constraints he changed the name of the program to Photoshop.

Around this time, Thomas continued his demo program in Silicon Valley and met an Apple engineer, who was also an art director at Adobe, named Russel Brown. Through his show, Adobe purchased a Photoshop license for distribution in September 1988. Thomas continued to work as a programmer in Ann Arbor, while John chose to work on plug-ins in California. The first version of Photoshop 1.0 was released on February 19, 1990 for the Macintosh.

This program continues to improve in terms of color features with each release, until Photoshop becomes the industry standard for digital color editing. Photoshop for the Macintosh was selling for $385 at the time. A chief architect of Adobe named Seetharaman Narayanan moved Photoshop to Microsoft Windows in 1993. The program's reach was eventually marketed more widely through Microsoft's worldwide Windows port. Due to Photoshop's rapid reach, Adobe purchased the program's patents from Thomas and John Knoll for $34.5 million in royalties sold per copy.

Adobe Photoshop started with version 1.0 in February 1990 to 7.0 in 2002. Then in 2003 the version was changed to Photoshop CS 8.0 to CS6 in May 2012 with Creative Suite branding. After the end of the CS version, Adobe released the last license update with Creative Cloud on January 9, 2017. This CC version started on June 18, 2013 Photoshop CC (14.0), then advanced versions CC 2014 (15.0) , CC 2015 (versions 16 and 17), CC 2017 (version 18), CC 2018 (version 19), CC 2019 (version 20), Photoshop 2020 (version 21), 21.1 and 21.2 from June 2020.
